The main point that I wanted to give in my visual story project is that true love is never easy but, that it is still real. Just because your young and never been in love dose not mean that it is not actual love or that it dose not exist. This was my original thought for my visual story project. I wanted to do a story of a first crush, but after reviewing my plot I found it lacking. So I moved onto a bigger question; What is true love and when dose it start? I wanted to use my photographs to tell a story of discovering what true love is and that love has no limitations like age.
Though I recieved negative remarks about using a little girl as my main characterm, I decided to continue using her. I have many reasons for why I found the photographs of the little girl to be the best platform for my visual story project. First off I wanted to do something different. I feel like every story about discovering love starts out with a child and follow them as they get older and then after reaching a mature age are able to truly love otheres and most of all themselves. I wanted to break the readymade identity of who finds true love and when. The second reason for using photographs of a little girl was to widen my audiance. Yes the story is geared to a younger generation but we as adults can relate to the little girl and the plot. It gives a sence of immortality and freewill to what ove is. We were all children at one time curious about love, so we can relate to the little girls heart. Focus more on the pathos than on the logos of my story.
The overall genre of my visual story project is love. I wanted to explore this enigmatic word and what forms there are and what is true love and when do you find it. My original VSP started out as a first crush ending badly and family comforting the little girl. My original VSP would have ended with true love being the love and comfort of ones family, but is that all. It seemed as if the moral of the story could be that famly is always there to love you or that you should just go back to your family and be sheltered because thats all the love you will ever find. Upon talking to Dr. Archibald I discover this tragic flaw. I then went back to my VSP and asked myself again What s True Love. I concluded that there are many different types of love like romantic and paternal, but there is one that nobody has the right to take away. It can not move away or fade without your consent. It is the love that you have for yourself, self-confidence, self-worth, self-esteme and freedom. Freedom of the heart to love because how can you love others if you can not love and appreciate-yourself.
I used Ramage's idea of readymade identities, constructed identites, defamiliarization and heterotopia. I have already discused the readymade flow of love. One discovers true love upon mental and physical maturity and that true love is found in another person, a sole mate with whom you have a romantic relationship with. I wanted to put my photographs together in oreder to break this readymade identity and have these photos speak as a whole with a new constructed identity all its own. The constucted identity of my vsp is that true love is self-esteme and love for yourself that has no age requirement. In order to come to this finished project I had to defamiliarize myself to the readymade. I had to look at my photos in a different way so that I precieved this little girl as having the ability to understand tru love. Why couldn't this little girl have these feelings and be capable of understanding them. I als formed a heterotopia of love. Love as in self-worth and confidence. I hope that everyone can see the power and the joy of this heterotopia of love that starts with you whenever you discover it and makes you free.
I even placed all of my photos in the shape of a heart and my VSP flows through the heart. The photos are arranged in this pattern to create a gestalt in the minds of my audiance of women young and mature. In the center is self-confidence; bravery, beauty and strength. I wanted the center of the heart to be the most imortant and and house what true love is with all the other types of love and life vents shaping the heart. Your life shapes the heart with you in the middle as a free women.
